The Norwegian Opera - Hjelle

The Norwegian Opera

The Norwegian Opera wanted to offer its guests more seating in the bar areas and at the hall entrances on the balconies. Snøhetta, who has been responsible for designing the entire interior of the Opera, was now given the task of designing a series of sofas, pouffes and tables.

For Snøhetta, it was important that the new series had a clear connection to the rest of the interior and a modular sofa with two mirror-inverted pouffes was the answer. The seating furniture can be put together in different constellations that can be adapted to the needs of different events. Snøhetta wanted a Norwegian manufacturer and Hjelle was given the task of producing and delivering the seating furniture.

“We greatly appreciate that The Norwegian Opera and Snøhetta chose a Norwegian producer for this assignment. This is a very special project where unique furniture is designed to fit the architecture. High demands were placed on both duration and execution. We want more developers and architects to make use of the expertise available from our product developers. This is how we can strengthen Norwegian production and create new jobs.”

The textile Redal from Gudbrandsdalen Uldvarefabrikk with a fine-tuned color scale, fell naturally into the palette on the balconies. As a detail and sneak peek of the orange velvet found in the chairs in the hall inside, a contrasting textile in orange from the Remix series from Kvadrat has been added in the sewing details on sofas and pouffes.

Kampen Mekaniske produced round tables in brown lacquered solid aluminum as a visual echo of the foyer furniture they previously produced for the Opera.
